Disposal

Disposal & Decomissioning of RadioActive Materials

Managing the end of a radioactive material’s lifecycle takes precision, compliance, and experience. Qal-Tek provides turnkey solutions for disposal, decay, and decommissioning—ensuring no gaps, no surprises, and no regulatory issues. From small sealed sources to bulk contaminated materials, we handle it all safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.

Decay-in-Storage Management

For short-lived radioactive materials, Qal-Tek provides secure decay-in-storage management until isotopes reach background levels. Our certified professionals maintain full records of inventory, storage, and disposal, keeping your program compliant with NRC and Agreement State requirements.

Radioactive Materials Management & Disposal

Qal-Tek manages the entire lifecycle of your sources—from possession and transfer to final disposal or decommissioning. Whether it’s sealed or unsealed sources, license transfers, or full facility decommissioning, we provide complete documentation and certification to close regulatory requirements. With hundreds of disposals successfully completed, we prioritize safety, compliance, and cost savings.

Bulk Material Disposal

When large-scale contamination is present, Qal-Tek coordinates full bulk disposal solutions. We manage packaging, manifesting, transport, and shipment of soil, debris, or equipment to approved facilities. Our turnkey service ensures compliance with NRC, DOT, and state regulations, reducing your risk on complex projects.

Gauge & Source Material Disposal

Qal-Tek specializes in the safe removal and disposal of sealed sources, gauges, and orphan sources, including:

  • Portable nuclear density gauges
  • Fixed gauges
  • Calibration standards and check sources

We manage end-of-life disposal, transfers, and manufacturer returns, with all paperwork and documentation required to amend or terminate your license.

Orphan & Legacy Source Disposal Programs

Qal-Tek is one of the most experienced providers in the industry for disposing of radioactive devices and gauges. Many older systems require hands-on expertise to safely remove sources and prepare devices for disposal. To better serve licensees, we offer two specialized programs:

Source Re‑utilization Program (SRP)

Using a fully regulatory‑compliant transfer process, we bring gauges and sources into our inventory and make them available for reuse. This reduces waste, minimizes the need for new materials, and supports disposal facilities by conserving volume for items with no reuse pathway. Reutilized devices and sources can be put to valuable use as training aids, system reloads, or cost‑effective replacements for organizations that need them. If no reuse outlet exists, we proceed with proper volume‑reduction disposal. Not all devices and sources are eligible for SRP.

Volume Reduction and Consolidation (VRC)

For devices not suitable for SRP—or for licensees who prefer direct disposal—our VRC program provides the most efficient and cost‑effective outlet. We remove sources from their heavy shielding, consolidate the material, and prepare highly condensed disposal packages. This approach lowers disposal costs for licensees and fulfills our ethical commitment to reduce unnecessary waste volume at licensed facilities.

Both programs include complete coordination with regulators and disposal facilities, along with the closure documentation needed for your license. Qal‑Tek ensures even the most challenging sources are managed correctly and responsibly.
